Gather in Strength
Lay Reader Dan Tinen will lead the First Parish worship service at 10 am tomorrow morning, Sunday September 8. The title of his sermon is “Gather in Strength.” As threats of violence and actual physical attacks become more frequent in US politics, Dan says, “Religious liberals who hold love at the center of our faith must be on guard against violating our principles while still strongly advocating for what we believe in.” All are welcome in person at the church and on Zoom. To participate via Zoom, please send an e-mail to fpnorthfieldma@gmail.com for a link.
Resistance and Renewal
with Rev. Melissa Carvill Ziemer
In these challenging times, let’s pause to remember the forces that we want to resist that diminish our spirits and the way we would like to seek renewal in the summer days ahead. We will be celebrating our annual Flower Ceremony. Please bring a flower or a few with you to share during our service. If you have been thinking about becoming a member of First Parish, we’d love to formally welcome you this coming Sunday. Please reach out to us to let us know if you would like to be welcomed as a member.
Our Sunday service begins at 10 am at the church, corner of Parker and Main Streets in Northfield, and on Zoom. All are welcome. To participate via Zoom, please send an e-mail to fpnorthfieldma@gmail.com for a link.
This service concludes the 2023-2024 cycle of Sunday services for First Parish. The congregation continues through the summer of course, beginning with the *First Parish Tag Sale Fundraising Event* on Saturday, June 22, 2024 from 9am to noon. Contact Lindsay McCarthy at thenewlindsay@hotmail.com, or text at 970-402-5063 for more information, to volunteer, or to contribute tag sale items.
Pluralism
In Praise of Our Differences, Rev. Melissa Carvill Ziemer
It is important for our Unitarian Universalist congregations to discern what we hold in common and find ways to live our values in the world. Pluralism is one of the values our Article II Study Commission has proposed for our collective consideration. Let’s explore how an enthusiastic embrace of our differences might help us grow our souls and bless the world, individually and together.
Our Sunday service for May 19 begins at 10 am at the church, corner of Parker and Main Streets in Northfield, and on Zoom. All are welcome. To participate via Zoom, please send an e-mail to fpnorthfieldma@gmail.com for a link.
Mothers and Others
Judy Wagner and Mike La Rue will lead a Chalice Circle this Sunday on “Mothers and Others.”
Remembering that the original inspiration for Mother’s Day goes back to Julia Ward Howe (Unitarian feminist and peace activist), they will lead us in honoring mothers and others who have nurtured us.
Who has nurtured us? How can we nurture others? How might Julia Ward Howe’s vision of a peaceful world be achieved?
Join us to participate in this service of reflection and sharing. The service will begin at 10 am, at First Parish, on the corner of Parker Avenue and Main Street, Northfield.
Sacred Spaces
What does it mean when we set a space apart from everyday use? Are some places “holier” than others? Or should we consider all of creation holy? Lay Reader Dan Tinen will lead us in examining how these concepts affect our choices in the material world…what buildings we build, what lands we set apart and what we use, and how we take care of them–like our beloved First Parish. Join us Sunday at 10 am in the sanctuary or on Zoom. To participate via Zoom, please send an e-mail to fpnorthfieldma@gmail.com for a link.
Heart to Heart

Four Reminders of Buddhism
Sue Space will lead our church service on Sunday, April 14, talking about the traditional Four Reminders of Buddhism. The reminders are precious human life, impermanence, samsara (life as we know it), and karma (actions have consequences). The service will commence at 10 am in the sanctuary, First Parish of Northfield, corner of Parker and Main Streets, and will be available on Zoom. To participate via Zoom, please send an e-mail to fpnorthfieldma@gmail.com for a link.
Genetic Genesis
The biblical story of Adam and Eve portrays all humanity as sharing a common origin. Thanks to scientific research across the world, an even more interesting story of how humans spread across the earth and the challenges our ancestors faced and overcame is emerging. Dan Tinen will be here in person this Sunday, April 7, to lead a life-affirming service at 10 am. Please join us in person at First Parish in Northfield or on Zoom at 10am. To participate via Zoom, please send an e-mail to fpnorthfieldma@gmail.com for a link.
